Sam Fender has given the complete sum of his £25,000 award winnings to the trust for venues, which works to save the United Kingdom's independent live music spots.

The star was presented with the prize on October 16 as his third album the album was named the best record of the last 12 months.

Fender has chosen to give the cash to the trust, in appreciation of the vital role grassroots venues fulfilled in his early career.

"I wouldn't be doing my current career if it wasn't for all the performances I played around the North East, and beyond, when I was starting out," said Fender. "These spaces are renowned, but they are in difficulty."

Beginning in 2023, more than 150 of these spaces have permanently closed – about one-sixth of the entire UK sector.

Recently, well-known musicians like Pulp, Coldplay, the singer Katy Perry and Ed Sheeran have all aided the trust in its attempts to keep the scene afloat, by applying a minor surcharge to their ticket costs, which benefits smaller concert halls.

Sam Fender also joined in, collecting in excess of £100,000 on his 2024 arena tour to support numerous small stages across England, Scotland, and Wales.

The donation helped venues that were dealing with possible closure due to issues arising from flooding, fire incidents and family tragedies, as well as permit problems, legal disputes and noise complaints.

Other venues were granted financial assistance in modernizing facilities and sound and lighting systems that helped artists and fans.

"The idea that money from shows in major spaces backs the independent spots, where it all starts for performers like me, is just sensible," Fender has stated.
