The Iconic Puzzle Game Couldn't Succeed at The Game Awards — An Additional Classification Might Solve This

As any major honors show draws close, you'll find an outcry to include fresh award types to honor unsung work and fill the spirits of fans with niche passions.

Another commentator previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. Equally deserving are strategy board titles, representing someone's personal cause. However, I must insist when I prioritize just as with other dedicated enthusiasts, there's a strong justification backing this proposal is the most urgent and important of all. Here's the proposal: There should be an award type for logic-based games.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Categorizing art by genre is not a science; it’s very subjective, and inevitably spark debates and end in fuzzy definitions. This explains why film award organizations don’t do it. But it is a necessary evil within the realm of interactive entertainment, which are so diverse they hardly constitute one unified medium.

To recognize the complete range of achievement in video games to be recognized, and to ensure all game types to receive proper recognition, genre categories are essential.

Existing Game Classification System

The major gaming awards presently include genre categories for Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these six categories actually cover a lot of ground, making space possible for most games within them.

This doesn't apply to puzzle games. No suitable classification appears to put them. Examine these examples from outstanding current releases, showing diverse approaches: building puzzles from a specific release, fast-paced pattern recognition from another release, thought-provoking social scenarios from additional release. Which classification works within current classifications? Nowhere, that’s where.

Acknowledgment Issues

There are dozens of brilliant puzzle games released every year that have no home at major award shows, except when they manage to fit classification types such as Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive Indie races.

  • A renowned logic title got overlooked in any category in 2014
  • Another imaginative release missed out during that ceremony
  • Well-received sorting experience received no acknowledgment that year
  • Just some brain-teasers scraped into small studio or handheld classifications

Importance of Logic Titles

Commonly they're small games, but the art of the puzzle game holds tremendous importance. Famous handheld logic titles rank among most popular titles in the world maintaining this status for many years.

The legendary block-stacking game rivals popular creative games for the title of most purchased experience; it’s also in the running for best game of all time. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks to the art of video games, while interacting with diverse game types.

Proposal and Rationale

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter that issue. It would be easy to populate a field of five engaging, different, qualified experiences each ceremony simply — actually, with challenge, because you’d have to leave so many good games out.

And to reiterate, these are games that otherwise have no home at major gaming awards. Logic title developers function at the challenging frontier game development, creating some of most fundamental forms within interactive entertainment. Comparable to movie stunt professionals, they deserve recognition. We shouldn't delay decades.
